The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition with 48 teams and the first with a new 32-team knockout round. Groups of four compete in the group stage, with the top two plus the eight best third-placed sides advancing to the Round of 32.

  1. Group stage 12 groups of 4 teams. Each team plays 3 matches. Top two from each group plus the 8 best third-placed sides advance.
  2. Round of 32 New knockout round introduced for 2026. 32 teams play single-leg elimination matches.
  3. Round of 16 16 surviving teams play single-leg knockouts.
  4. Quarter-finals Eight teams remain. Extra time + penalties if tied.
  5. Semi-finals Four teams. Winners advance to the World Cup Final.
  6. Final MetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey, 19 July 2026. The winner is crowned world champion until 2030.
