About the Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is the top flight of professional club football in Germany, founded in 1963 as the country's first nationwide unified league. It is contested by 18 clubs and operates with promotion and relegation with the 2. Bundesliga. The league is known for its famous 50+1 ownership rule, which requires club members to retain a majority of voting rights, making it the most fan-owned top-flight league in European football. Bayern Munich dominate modern Bundesliga history, including a record 11 consecutive titles between 2013 and 2023.

Tournament Format

18 clubs play a home-and-away double round-robin for 34 matches per team. Points for a win are three, draws one. The top 4 qualify for the Champions League, the bottom two are automatically relegated, and 16th plays a two-legged play-off against the 3rd-placed 2. Bundesliga side.

  1. Regular season August to May, 34 matchdays with a short winter break in December-January.
  2. Champions League places Top 4 clubs enter the UEFA Champions League league phase directly.
  3. Europa & Conference League 5th enters Europa League; 6th into Conference League (cup winner may shift).
  4. Direct relegation 17th and 18th drop to 2. Bundesliga automatically.
  5. Relegation play-off 16th plays two-legged play-off vs 3rd-placed 2. Bundesliga club for a Bundesliga spot.
