About the English Premier League

The Premier League is the top level of the English football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the English Football League (EFL). Founded in 1992 as the FA Premier League after clubs in the Football League First Division broke away from the Football League to take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal, it is now the most-watched football league in the world. Seasons run from August to May, with each team playing all others twice (home and away) for a total of 38 matches each.

Tournament Format

20 clubs play each other twice — once at home, once away — for a total of 38 matches per team. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw, none for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion, and the bottom three are relegated to the Championship.

  1. Regular season August to May. 380 total matches across 38 game-weeks.
  2. Champions League places Top 4 qualify directly for the UEFA Champions League league phase.
  3. Europa & Conference League 5th place enters Europa League; 6th place enters Conference League play-off (FA Cup winner may shift this).
  4. Relegation Bottom 3 clubs relegated to the EFL Championship; replaced by 2 Championship auto-promoted sides + play-off winner.
  5. Tiebreakers Points → goal difference → goals scored → head-to-head record. Play-offs only if still tied for title or relegation.
